To Anyone Who Will Listen,

My name is… well, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what I’ve done. I own a mini-mart, a seemingly innocuous place filled with candy bars and lottery tickets. But behind the counter, behind the friendly smile, I hid a darkness that has now consumed me.

It all started with Mark, my neighbor. He was married to Sarah, a sweet, kind woman with two beautiful children. They were the picture of suburban bliss, and I… I envied them. I wanted what they had, especially Mark.

So, I set out to destroy them.

It started subtly. I’d “accidentally” run into Mark at the store, making small talk, offering him discounts, flirting just enough to pique his interest. I knew he was vulnerable. He was a good man, but he was bored, and I offered him excitement.

Then, I started spreading rumors about Sarah. I’d tell customers that I saw her with another man, that she was neglecting her children, that she was spending all of Mark’s money. I knew it wasn’t true, but I didn’t care. I wanted to poison the well, to make Mark doubt his wife.

It worked.

Mark started coming to the store more often, confiding in me about his marital problems. I’d listen patiently, offering him sympathy and a shoulder to cry on. I’d subtly suggest that he deserved better, that he deserved someone who truly appreciated him.

Then, I upped the ante.

I knew Sarah volunteered at a local animal shelter. One night, I broke into the shelter and released all the animals. It was chaos. The news reported it as a random act of vandalism, but I knew it would hurt Sarah, that it would damage her reputation.

And then, the most unforgivable act of all.

I knew Mark and Sarah were struggling financially. I also knew that Mark had a gambling problem, one he had kept hidden from his wife. So, I anonymously sent him a large sum of money, enough to get him hooked again. He started gambling, lost everything, and spiraled into debt.

Sarah found out, and she left him.

I was there to pick up the pieces. I comforted Mark, told him that I had always cared for him, and offered him a place to stay. He was broken, vulnerable, and completely dependent on me.

I had him.

We got married a few months later. Sarah and the kids moved away, their lives shattered. I had won. Or so I thought.

The guilt started slowly, a nagging voice in the back of my mind. But I ignored it, burying it under layers of expensive clothes and lavish vacations. I told myself that I deserved to be happy, that I had finally gotten what I wanted.

But now, it’s all falling apart.

I’ve been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. The doctors say it’s incurable. I’m in constant pain, and the treatments are making me weaker every day.

I know it’s a punishment. A punishment for what I did to Sarah, to Mark, to their children. A punishment for the lies, the manipulation, and the cruelty.

Mark is still with me, but he’s not the same man I fell in love with. He’s distant, withdrawn, and I can see the resentment in his eyes. He knows, deep down, that I’m responsible for everything that happened to his family.

I’m dying, alone and unloved.

I’m writing this because I want the world to know the truth. I want Sarah and her children to know that I’m sorry. I know it won’t undo what I’ve done, but maybe, just maybe, it will ease my conscience a little.

I don’t deserve forgiveness. I don’t deserve peace. But I needed to confess, to tell someone the truth before it’s too late.

May God have mercy on my soul. Because I certainly don’t.
